Bond reacts to Conservatives’ proposal to slash UK aid budget to £1 billion

Responding to news that the Conservatives would shrink the UK aid budget to just £1 billion a year to fund prison places in the UK, Romilly Greenhill, CEO of Bond, the UK network for NGOs, said:

“The Conservative Party’s short term decision to cut UK aid to solve fiscal and domestic pressures is a false economy – that would leave us all, at home and abroad, paying a higher price down the line. We would be left unable to fight the global threats of conflict, disease and climate crisis that drive extreme poverty and inequality, increase insecurity and push up costs for communities in the UK and across the world. This decision would also irreparably damage the UK’s reputation and credibility, leaving us isolated at a moment where strong international partnerships and cooperation are more important than ever.”
