Bond reacts to Andy Burnham’s appointment as Prime Minister

As Andy Burnham MP becomes Prime Minister of the UK, Romilly Greenhill, CEO of Bond, the UK network for NGOs, said:

“Congratulations to Andy Burnham on his appointment as Prime Minister of the UK. Together with the new Foreign Secretary, the new Prime Minister now has a vital opportunity to reverse recent governments’ retreats from our international development commitments. By recognising the role of international development in driving progress towards equality, opportunity and peace – and ensuring strong leadership on this in his Cabinet – the Prime Minister can honour Labour’s manifesto commitments. This must include setting out a roadmap to returning UK aid spending back to 0.7% of GNI, and restoring the UK’s reputation as a reliable partner on the global stage.

“As the UK prepares to take over presidency of the G20, the Labour government must also champion much-needed reforms to the global financial system – tackling unjust debts, illicit financial flows and implementing fairer tax rules – to support low- and middle-income countries to invest in their own public services and lift communities out of poverty worldwide at no cost to the ordinary UK taxpayer.

“We look forward to working with Andy Burnham and his Cabinet to address humanitarian challenges and help build a safer, more equal and more prosperous world for us all.”
