Bond response to International Development Committee’s interim report: Effectiveness of UK Aid

Stephanie Draper, CEO of Bond said:

“We welcome this interim report from the IDC that recommends that an independent, autonomous Department for International Development, with cabinet-level representation, is essential if UK aid is to help end extreme poverty.

Bond has been calling for increased oversight by DFID of aid spending by other departments and cross-departmental funds for some time now, so we fully support the IDC’s call for stronger transparency, accountability and DFID oversight of UK aid, to ensure it meets its primary purpose of contributing to poverty reduction and sustainable development.

The Covid-19 pandemic has reiterated the importance of DFID and the Secretary of State for International Development, as well as the valuable role the department plays in maintaining the UK’s international reputation and influence. A strong, independent DFID will be crucial if we are to build back better after the pandemic, achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and create a healthier, safer and more sustainable world.”
