For immediate release: Bond statement in response to the International Development Committee’s Effectiveness of UK Aid evidence session

Simon Starling, Director of Policy, Advocacy and Research at Bond, the UK network for NGOs said:

“This afternoon’s evidence session once again flags the risks of any future merger between DFID and the FCO. DFID plays an important role on the global stage in driving up standards of aid quality, and experts agree that by continuing to dilute the focus of UK aid on poverty reduction, the UK Government is undermining its commitment to deliver aid to those who need it the most. UK aid is struggling to cope with the burden of meeting increasingly divergent objectives.

We urge the Government to engage with the evidence, recognise the development and humanitarian expertise coming out of this inquiry and use it to inform their upcoming Integrated Review. This is the best way to ensure we have a strong Department for International Development working to ensure a safe, healthy and prosperous world for us all.”
