Asier Hernando Malax-Echevarría is a human geographer working at the intersection of international cooperation reform, social movements, and decolonial thinking. He has over twenty years of experience across Latin America, where he has spent most of his professional life and is currently based in Peru.
His career includes senior leadership roles at Oxfam, where he served twice as Regional Director for Latin America. He is also a university professor, teaching on persuasion, advocacy, and development and international cooperation at IE University in Madrid, and at several universities in Peru.
In recent years, his work has focused on advancing structural reforms in the international cooperation system, particularly around power redistribution and moving beyond traditional aid models. He works closely with Latin American social movements and academic networks, with whom he co-founded the Latin American Permanent Forum for the Decolonisation of Cooperation, and founded Acápacá, a regional platform aimed at influencing and transforming international cooperation.
His current focus is on contributing to a new paradigm of cooperation rooted in the leadership of Latin American and Caribbean organisations, challenging the concentration of decision-making in traditional global centres.
