Rosemary Gathara’s specialty is in mental health, epilepsy and community health delivery with 20 years’ experience. She was the manager of the National Epilepsy Association in Kenya, KAWE, and now leads BasicNeeds/BasicRights Kenya, the leading Mental Health NGO. Basic Needs Kenya programmes work especially with the youth and livelihoods – conducting public awareness and anti-stigma campaigns in the urban towns and rural areas implementing the social contact approach and working with the media to change public perceptions and stereotypes around mental health. She is a member of the Kenya Quality Rights Coordination Committee to promote human rights and improve quality of care standards in mental health and related services.
