Mervyn has held senior positions in BBC News, UN and global non-governmental organisations. He was a journalist and producer on BBC TV's Six O'Clock News and senior duty editor on BBC Radio 4's World At One, PM and Broadcasting House. He was one of the founders of BBC News Online and pioneered audio and video on the web.

Mervyn joined UNICEF in 2005 to manage their tsunami response communications in Indonesia. He was UNICEF Regional Communications Manager for Eastern Europe and Central Asia and Communications Chief in Sri Lanka in the wake of the civil war. From 2012 to 2015, he set up and led Save the Children's Global Media Unit based in London. He is currently studying for a master's degree in jazz performance at the London Guildhall.
