Dr Mark Claydon-Smith has been with the Research Councils for over 20 years. Currently Mark works within the executive directorate which provides support to the Research Councils in overlapping and collective areas of interest. The Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF), announced in 2016, aims to build UK and global development research capacity and capability by forging strong and enduring partnerships between academic communities in the UK and the Global South and by enhancing the research and innovation capacity of both. Working with the £1.5 billion budget, Mark co-ordinates the activity across the 7 Research Councils and promotes co-ordination across all delivery partners including the 4 National Academies, UK Space Agency and the Funding Councils. He leads this with his team under Andrew Thompson as RCUK Champion.

Prior to joining RCUK, Mark worked in Engineering and Manufacturing within EPSRC.
