Dr Grainne Healy has been chairwoman of Marriage Equality, the NGO campaigning for marriage equality in Ireland since 2004. In January 2015, she became Co-Director of Yes Equality, the civil society campaign which led to the successful outcome of the Marriage Referendum in Ireland in May when the vote was won by 62% saying Yes.
She has recently co-authored the book telling the story of the referendum win, Ireland Says Yes The Inside Story of How the Vote for Marriage Equality Was Won (Healy, Sheehan, Whelan, Merrion Press, 2016).
Her work in campaigns prior to Yes Equality, includes campaigns on reproductive rights, gender equality and the Turn off the Red Light Campaign. She is former Chairwoman of National Women’s Council of Ireland and was Vice President of the European Women’s Lobby. She has been honoured for her campaigning work with a President’s Award by DCU in 2014, a GALA in 2015 (gay and lesbian awards) and was awarded the Tatler Woman of the Year Award in 2015. Yes Equality has been given many awards nationally and Internationally, including the prestigious People of the Year Award for Community Organisation of the Year in Ireland in November 2015.
