Protecting local NGO staff

28 October 2015

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are experiencing new challenges when it comes to protecting the health of their staff.

Traditionally, the majority of international NGO staff working in developing countries came from North America and Europe. However, times are changing. Along with the need to reduce operational costs, NGOs are hiring more talent with a deep knowledge of local contexts and challenges.

The success of an NGO employee's assignment depends on their well-being and safety. Cigna has created its CoverN'GO Regional plan, designed specifically for key local and third-country national staff in Africa. The regional plan is available in addition to the CoverN’GO Global plan, which is designed primarily for expats.

The choice of plan allows organisations the flexibility to offer both expats and key local and third-country national staff the most appropriate level of cover.

The main features of the new regional plan are:

  • inpatient and outpatient cover with lower annual limits;
  • vaccinations and preventive care, including preventive medications e.g. against malaria;
  • cover for HIV/AIDS treatment;
  • optional evacuation cover;
  • africa as an area of cover.
