Senior Policy & Advocacy Adviser – Education

Save the Children
Closing date: 20 March 2018
Job Type: Paid
Location: London
12 months Fixed Term Contract

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join us on a 12 month maternity cover contract as a Senior Education Policy and Advocacy Adviser with knowledge, experience and an established reputation in global education policy to develop and implement our ambitious plans.

Working in more than 120 countries, we do whatever it takes to create breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Our Policy, Advocacy, and Campaigns department is where we drive political agendas at national and global levels. We’ve integrated lobbying, policy, research and campaigning into one agile, powerful engine for change. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

Despite the uncontested benefits of supporting the physical and cognitive development of children before the age of 8 (for which there is now an overwhelming evidence base), a lack of investment, political leadership and coherent policy deny children, especially the poorest and most marginalised, the vital services and support that they need to meet their development milestones. We’re committed to changing this and are developing an integrated campaign aimed at ensuring all children have access to services which support their growth and development in order to ensure that they start primary school at the right age and are ready to learn.

As our Senior Education Policy & Advocacy Adviser you’ll play a central role in identifying the global and national policies we need to change, in order to deliver this commitment and then lead our lobbying, policy, research and campaigning efforts in this area. You will be based in our Education Policy and Advocacy Team, which is part of our Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns Division, where we drive policy change both nationally and globally. You will be busy but you’ll be joining a respected and experienced team and have the opportunity to contribute to real change for children. You will also lead the Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns Division’s contribution to Save the Children’s Early Learning Campaign, including the delivery of a flagship report on Early Learning, together with a cutting-edge advocacy strategy to achieve real change for children internationally. In addition you will:

  • Help expand the global coalition of organisations and stakeholders calling for high quality universal early learning service provision across the world
  • Work with and through new innovative partnerships to mobilise additional resources and new technologies for early learning
  • Work with Save the Children’s offices in priority countries to develop and implement advocacy strategies that will secure national level early learning policy development and adoption, increased financing for early learning and scale up of quality early learning services
  • Produce high-quality reports, briefings, presentations and other written material for internal and external use, including a launch report for our Early Learning campaign in 2018
  • Build Save the Children’s expertise and reputation for thought leadership in the area of early learning and early childhood development (ECD)
  • Represent Save the Children externally, including in the media, on issues of early years education and create a solid network of peers and influencers in relevant organisations.
  • Line manage one position in the team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic, creative and highly organised individual who has an excellent understanding education policy, and ideally of early childhood development and early learning policy issues at a national and international level and experience of working on education advocacy globally. To be successful in this role you will need to have:

  • Significant knowledge and experience of global education policy and advocacy, ideally with knowledge of early learning and an established reputation in the field
  • Significant experience in and a track record of success in the development and implementation of education advocacy strategies
  • Significant experience of developing policy positions and materials for a range of audiences.

At Save the Children we are committed to the safeguarding and protection of children in our work. We will do everything possible to ensure that only those who are suitable to work with children are recruited to work for us. This post is subject to a range of vetting checks including a criminal records disclosure.

Our mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. If you share our mission, are passionate about making it happen and strongly believe you can contribute then join us and we'll give you every opportunity to succeed. We look forward to hearing from you.
