A new role in the Communications Team and will lead the end-to-end production and management of Girls Not Brides external-facing publications, from event flyers to more detailed research reports.

Based in the Girls Not Brides office in Central London, the Publications Officer will work closely with and report to the Head of Communications. This is a new role in the Communications Team and will lead the end-to-end production and management of Girls Not Brides external-facing publications, from event flyers to more detailed research reports. This means taking publications requirements from the initial stages, to copy-editing and proofreading, design, translation, production, and dissemination. With a critical eye for editing and a keen sense of design, you’ll bring your excellent editorial and production skills to strengthen our Communications Team and help us raise awareness of the issue of child marriage across the world.

We are a truly global partnership, and we produce materials in English, French and Spanish. You will need to have a basic working knowledge of all languages, and ideally be proficient in Spanish. You will also take on responsibility for the day to day management of our brand and voice through our external communications products, including support to our colleagues and members.

Girls Not Brides

Girls Not Brides is the only global partnership entirely focused on creating and sustaining a worldwide movement to end child marriage, and ensuring that this movement leads to tangible change for the girls at risk or affected by the practice. We are a network of more than 1,300 civil society organisations in over 100 countries, all committed to working in partnership to end child marriage. Our vision is a world without child marriage where girls and women enjoy equal status with boys and men, and are able to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their lives.

Our members are diverse. They vary in size, location, and the type of work they do. They include groups focused on research and advocacy as well as programme implementers and service providers working directly in their communities. Our members address the issue of child marriage from various perspectives, including health, women’s and girls’ rights, child protection, education, economic empowerment and general development.

The global partnership is supported by the Girls Not Brides secretariat with teams in UK (London), Mexico, Kenya, India and Senegal and has an annual budget of approximately £5 million.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the creative brief process/traffic management for all publications content – this includes policy briefs, thematic/solutions briefs, reports, event flyers etc. Work with team members across Girls Not Brides to ensure their content is on-brand, accessible, and useful.
  • Copy edit and proofread documents in English and Spanish at a minimum (French would also be highly desirable), including liaising with designers for mark-up as needed.
  • Lay out basic documents in-house using Word, Adobe InDesign.
  • Manage and maintain relationships with all production suppliers including translators, designers, printers and creative consultants.
  • Day-to-day management of budgets for delivery of materials.
  • Manage stock and inventory of resources across all offices, working with regional assistants as needed.
  • Advise on and support development of infographics and other creative content for compelling publications.
  • Support Head of Communications on brand guardianship, acting as day-to-day lead for the style guide. 
  • Support Senior Digital Officer in managing resources section of the website, with responsibility for uploading content, analysing usage.
  • Support with appropriate usage of images across all our materials – this includes researching / sourcing images and appropriate copyright permissions.
  • Maintain glossaries across languages, liaise with translators as primary point of contact for all materials (printed, digital) 
  • Support broader organisation with editing/formatting of documents for external purposes (proposals, presentations etc.)

Person Specification

Essential

  • Professional experience in a similar role.
  • Educated to degree level or proven experience in a related field plus extensive relevant professional training.
  • Excellent written English and Spanish skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with people from different backgrounds and cultures.
  • Experience of using InDesign, Photoshop, Canva, Asset Bank and other similar tools.
  • Experience using WordPress, Google Analytics and other related systems.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Willingness to work flexibly and travel internationally, as necessary.

Desirable

  • Proficiency in Arabic or French.
  • Experience of working for a non-governmental or with civil society organisations.
  • Experience of working with designers, translators, printers.
  • Experience working within a design or production studio and managing editorial processes.
  • Brand management and guardianship.
  • Proficiency in the latest versions of Microsoft Office.
