We’re not about delivering quick fixes, but instead we focus on long-lasting, sustainable change, that will impact generations to come. Role overview

We're looking for a Media Manager with a strong desire to inspire people through our unique approach to development. VSO has some great stories to tell about the impact we're having, but we need to get these in the right print and broadcast media to help significantly increase our development work.

You'll ideally be a journalist by training, or you've worked in a similar role for a number of years at another NGO. You've a good eye for a story, established media contacts, and the ability to build strong effective relationships with volunteers and colleagues.

You'll be comfortable planning and delivering high-profile media activity globally. An understanding of international development issues is essential. We'd also expect you to have a thorough knowledge of the media landscape, at least in the UK, but ideally including the other countries we work in too.

You'll also be confident managing media incidents and issues that represent a reputational risk, and be able to speak with authority to senior colleagues and key stakeholders to manage any media implications.

Skills, qualifications and experience

  • Significant experience of crisis and reputation management
  • Experience of leading, networking and influencing effectively within a dispersed organisation and of advising senior staff
  • Significant proven experience in people management, performance management and supporting the learning and development of individuals.
  • Understanding of International development policy, the institutional aid environment and specifically UKAID
  • Experience of using media to influence key opinion formers.
  • Good understanding of media strategies and have up to date knowledge of media trends and tools
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent

Competencies and Behaviour

At VSO we believe progress is only possible by working together. Whether you want to join us as an employee, or as a volunteer working in your own country, overseas or online, our selection process includes an assessment based on these core competencies:

  • Ability to be open minded and respectful
  • Ability to be resilient and adaptive to new situations
  • Ability to facilitate positive change and build sustainable working relationships
  • Ability to seek and share knowledge
