Our work on gender, peace and security is relevant in all conflict settings and cuts across our thematic and geographic programmes. This role also focuses on delivering our objective: Challenge gender norms that cause and perpetuate conflict.

Saferworld is an independent non-governmental organisation that works to prevent and reduce violent conflict and promote cooperative approaches to security. We work with civil society, governments and international organisations to encourage and support effective policies and practices through advocacy, research, and policy development, and through supporting the actions of others. We engage in over 20 countries and contexts in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

The Adviser will work within the Policy, Advocacy and Communications Division (PAC). PAC proposes and advocates for improved policies and practices relating to conflict, security, justice, governance, arms control and external engagement in conflict environments.

Our work on gender, peace and security is relevant in all conflict settings and cuts across all of our thematic work and geographic programmes. This role also has a specific focus on delivering Saferworld’s organisational Strategic Objective 2: Challenge gender norms that cause and perpetuate conflict and insecurity.

The Gender Adviser will provide an advice and support role for a number of ongoing and future programmes that are either focused on gender, peace and security entirely, or involve a component of that. Project components range from ones examining gender norms as drivers of conflict to others on women’s participation in peacebuilding and on sexual- and gender-based violence, including the implementation of the UN women, peace and security agenda. These include country-focused as well as policy-focused programmes.

Finally, the Gender Adviser will lead Saferworld’s broader policy work on gender, peace and security including representing Saferworld on the Gender Action on Peace and Security network (GAPS) and participating in other networks / working groups as appropriate.

The person we are looking for will have demonstrable work experience on gender or women’s rights – preferably in a context of conflict prevention, security and justice and/or peacebuilding coupled with experience of advising on and/or implementing programmes on gender mainstreaming or gender transformation, preferably related to conflict-affected settings.   S/he will have strong analytical skills and a proven ability to write policy papers, briefing and articles.  Experience of working on conflict, gender equality, security, justice, human rights and/or governance issues in at least two context in the regions where Safeworld works would be a distinct advantage.
