Childhood cancer is curable in around 80% of cases in developed countries but in developing countries the survival rate is often less than 10%. Many childhood cancers can be cured in low and middle income countries with drugs and procedures which have been known to doctors for decades. However, most children with cancer in these countries are either not diagnosed or fail to get adequate treatment with the result that thousands die unnecessarily every year because of a lack of relatively inexpensive healthcare. Worse still, most die without any effective pain relief.
World Child Cancer was established in 2007 to improve curative treatment and palliative care for children with cancer in low and middle income countries. We facilitate twinning partnerships between hospitals in resource-rich and resource-poor countries to transfer knowledge, skills and expertise to improve survival rates and reduce suffering.
We are currently funding programmes in 9 countries across Africa, southeast Asia and Central America. The Director of Programmes role is essential in leading the growth and sustainability of our programme strategy, and managing our passionate programmes team to support the delivery of our mission.
