We are looking for an experienced leader to join us as Humanitarian Public Health Team Director.

You will lead and develop the Humanitarian Public Health Team as a vibrant, innovative and growing humanitarian capability, generating resources, collaboratively serving the needs of the wider movement, and fostering the widest possible buy-in and support from all key stakeholders.


Our Humanitarian Department works alongside our country programmes to ensure that children survive, learn and are protected in times of crisis, conflict and disaster.  Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

As Humanitarian Public Health Team (HPHT) Director you will ensure the growth and acceptance of our  cutting-edge child focused humanitarian public health response as an integral component of our response capability.. The Director will also ensure that the Team is linked to wider humanitarian public health policy development as well as organisational learning through effective cross-organisational and inter-agency working. In addition you will:


  • Lead on fundraising for the HPHT in general and the Emergency Health Unit (EHU) in particular
  • Deliver a robust business model and work plan for the EHU including understanding and securing institutional and voluntary funding opportunities and ensuring work-stream deliverables are identified, assigned and completed within time
  • Manage and develop staff within the Humanitarian Public Health Team, ensuring that they have relevant, clear and achievable objectives, manageable workloads and appropriate professional development plans
  • Lead on the development of positions and their representation that can enhance the delivery of public health services for children, within humanitarian action and in transition environments
  • Ensure that the Humanitarian Public Health voice of Save the Children is represented in internal and external forums.

To be successful you will have significant working knowledge and a strong background in humanitarian public health operations within an international organisation, a substantial proportion of which should have been in a senior managerial/leadership role. You will also have a proven track record and flair for strategic planning and resource allocation, and significant experience of fundraising with key humanitarian donors. In addition you will have:

  • Extensive experience of effective senior team management, including experience of building shared objectives, quality control, evaluation, motivation, performance management and development and training
  • Significant experience with influencing global operations, preferably within the public health sphere
  • Demonstrable ability to manage large budgets and deliver programmes or projects to agreed expenditure targets
  • Proven diplomatic, influencing, entrepreneurial and negotiating skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills and the ability to work within and / or lead large and diverse teams in often stressful environments.
