Director of Development

Overseas Development Institute
Competitive package
Closing date: 13 July 2017
Job Type: Paid
Location: London
You will both maximise relationships with our existing, high-profile major donors and develop new relationships with trusts and foundations, philanthropists and corporate donors.

The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) is a leading independent think tank on international development and humanitarian issues. Our first-class research, practical policy advice and communications promote global progress and prosperity by focusing on improving the lives of the world’s poorest people.

We are looking for a Director of Development to drive and implement a fundraising strategy that allows us to extend our global reach and reputation and supplements our existing programme funding. Building on our recent and comprehensive fundraising review, the new role of Director of Development will both maximise relationships with our existing, high-profile major donors and develop new relationships with trusts and foundations, philanthropists and corporate donors. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will identify and develop donor propositions that deliver income in addition to our individual programmes, working closely with our programme and researcher colleagues. The Director of Development will also work closely with senior staff and the Board to cultivate donors, will feed into organisational strategy and will recruit a fundraiser to support this exciting stage in our growth.

The successful candidate will be an entrepreneurial and proven major donor professional, with a successful track record of growing income from new and existing trusts, foundations and philanthropists. As an exceptional relationship builder, you will be adept at both developing relationships with major donors as well as with the board and staff at all levels. You will also be a strong communicator, able to communicate complex ideas into clear vision, whilst being able to present technical detail as needed. Most importantly, you will be ambitious to seize the income opportunities open to us as we continue to grow and develop our global impact.
