Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved during the time up to 2030.

They are universal goals which involve and apply to the entire world, developed and developing countries alike.

If taken seriously, this new agenda has the power to transform our world, and deliver a fairer and more sustainable future for all.

Leave no one behind

The commitment to "leave no one behind" is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As we embark on this great collective journey, we pledge that no one will be left behind. We wish to see the goals and targets met for all nations and peoples and for all segments of society.

If properly implemented, this principle will ensure the SDGs make even more progress than the Millennium Development Goals; they will benefit everyone, everywhere and put the most marginalised people first.

SDG essentials

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was agreed in September 2015, at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit. As well as 17 Goals, governments agreed a set of targets for the Goals, along with plans for financing, development of indicators [PDF] of success, and follow up and review mechanisms.

Bond has produced a number of useful papers on the progress and monitoring of the Goals:

What we're doing

  • We're bringing the Bond network together so that member organisations can make the most effective contribution to the new goals.
  • We're working to ensure the principle of "leave no one behind" is not forgotten, and we're helping members learn from each other's experiences of the challenges of this ambitious approach.
  • We're engaging with the UK government to help them "bring the goals home": we host the secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the SDGs and we provide policy briefings and recommendations to UK parliamentarians and relevant committees on the implementation of the SDGs.
  • We're working with colleagues around the world to ensure all governments stick to their commitments.
