Policy advocacy is challenging and complex. Relevance, timing, context and evidence are all key factors. While better use of evidence increases the legitimacy and effectiveness of its policy engagement efforts, and therefore ensures that policy recommendations are genuinely pro-poor, it is also being realised that this relation is not at all linear since politics and capacity around the uptake of research also play a big role.

The BOND Advocacy Capacity Building Group was formed from the merger of the Southern Advocacy Group and the Capacity Building Group, both of which were engaged in facilitating issues around advocating and communicating for policy change.

The mandate of the Advocacy Capacity Building Group is to support effective policy analysis, engagement and advocacy by civil society organisations in the south.

Group news

The launch event for the Advocacy Capacity Building Group was held on 2 June 2008 at the BOND offices in London.

John Young, from the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) made a presentation entitled ‘Making the case: Using research-based evidence for policy advocacy (ppt, 4.1MB) ’. This was followed by Alberto Tavares form the WWF Office in Western Amazon, Acre State, Brazil who presented on ‘Success and Challenges in the Amazon Rainforest (ppt, 8.8MB)’.

The event was a fantastic opportunity to hear speakers from different civil society organisations talk about their experience with advocacy especially in the south. All of the agencies that attended the meeting also had the opportunity to identify what are the key common issues that the group can work on over the coming few years and to discuss how the group should be organised.

The event gave people the chance to meet others who are thinking about and supporting strategies to address the different options for building the advocacy capacity of individuals and institutions to be more effective in advocating for social change.
