Starting up

The Charity Commission
The Charity Commission has produced guidance and resources for small charities and anyone thinking of setting up a small charity. Topics covered include choosing trustees, dealing with property, preparing accounts and annual reports and the small charities constitution which is for charities that are unlikely to reach the £5,000 registration threshold.

CIVICUS

CIVICUS, an international alliance dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society throughout the world, provides various toolkits for NGOs, including guidance on strategic planning and fundraising.

The World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (WANGO)

'How to start an NGO' presents ten steps, in general chronological order, that are useful in the formation of an NGO. It is a broad “how to” guideline and these issues may vary depending on each NGO, its particular focus and the legislation of the country where it is based.

Support for Charities

Small Charities Coalition
The Small Charities Coalition helps small charities access skills, experience and resources by, for example, matchmaking small charities with other organisations, and providing advice, information, and personal development opportunities.

iNspire
iNspire is a not-for-profit organisation that supports small charities by connecting them with entrepreneurs, senior business leaders, and professional advisors who are able to provide them the skills and guidance the small charity is looking for. 

Pilotlight
Pilotlight works to help small charities fulfil their potential by matching them with leaders from business and industry who want to donate their skills to charities.

National Association for Voluntary and Community Action (NAVCA)
The NAVCA website has a directory of local Councils for Voluntary Service (CVS). Find out here who your local CVS is - they will be able to provide you with a range of supports. You can also check with them whether there are dedicated funding advisory bureaux in your area.

KnowHow NonProfit website has tips and advice on organisational development, strategies, improving performance, budgets and finance, and day-to-day operations.

NCVO Voluntary Sector Database
The Voluntary Sector Datastore brings together data collected held and collected by voluntary and community organisations - both as a source of research data and as an opportunity for voluntary organisations.

VolResource
The Volresource website has useful information on anything to do with running a voluntary sector organisation.
