UK Aid Network
The UK Aid Network (UKAN) was formed in November 2004 to co-ordinate policy and lobbying efforts as part of MAKE POVERTY HISTORY. UKAN's members decided to continue working together, and UKAN is now an important means for UK NGOs to work together for more and better aid.
UKAN members pool resources, expertise and strategic thinking on advocating for an increase in aid and for improvements in the quality and effectiveness of aid for fighting poverty. UKAN focuses on holding the UK government to account for its pledges to increase aid, and on pressing for aid that is more poverty-focused, better co-ordinated and aligned to developing countries' needs and priorities.
In 2010, UKAN will continue to engaged on aid quality and quantity issues ensuring that aid promises but also aid effectiveness will be high on the agenda during and post the UK General Election.
In 2009, UKAN has engaged with DFID ministers and government officials to push for stronger commitments on aid effectiveness and real changes in practice on the ground. In 2008, UKAN led UK advocacy around the High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Accra, Ghana, meeting regularly with DFID officials throughout the year, and with the Secretary of State, Douglas Alexander, on the eve of the Forum itself.
Internationally, UKAN has played a key role in CSO advocacy in the run up to the Accra High Level Forum (see the Better Aid website), and in establishing a new international campaign for transparency in the aid system (see www.publishwhatyoufund.org). On a European level, UKAN has helped lead the work of the Aidwatch initiative (see the CONCORD website), including the Aidwatch Report.
