Tzedek

Tzedek, a leading UK Jewish charity, works regardless of race and religion to provide direct support to some of the world's poorest communities.

In Hebrew, the word Tzedek translates as ‘justice'. Maimonides, a great twelth century Rabbi, taught that the highest level of charity is to make the recipient self-sufficient. That is the philosophy which underlies Tzedek's grants: we aim to work with our partners to enable them to break out of poverty. We currently fund nineteen projects in India and Africa, ranging from a microcredit scheme for disabled people in Andhra Pradesh to a women's self-help group in Uganda.

Tzedek also aims to raise the global social justice agenda within the Jewish community. We run workshops, assemblies and events about the causes and effects of global poverty and the Jewish obligation to respond. We aim to build a Jewish community which is committed to fighting for economic and social justice worldwide. Every summer, Tzedek sends a group of young Jewish adults to volunteer for two months in India or Ghana. Over a hundred people have now graduated from our Overseas Volunteer Programme, returning to their communities with a deeper understanding of development issues and a commitment to work towards global social justice.

We are excited about the potential of the Jewish community in the UK to make a significant impact for those around the world who really need it.
