Influencing policy on international development

The new UK Government

The UK General Election has led to significant changes in the UK political landscape with a Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government.

Andrew Mitchell MP is the new Secretary of State for International Development. Other new figures in the Department for International Development include Alan Duncan MP, Minister of State, and Stephen O’Brien MP, the new Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State.

Bond Chief Executive Nick Roseveare said:

“We look forward to working with the new International Development team and other ministers across the coalition Government as well as the many other continuing and the new MPs passionate about tackling global poverty and inequality.

The poorest people of the world are bearing a disproportionate burden of the global economic and climate crises. During this election campaign as many as one million children died of preventable or treatable causes. Now is the time to step up Britain’s global leadership, ensuring that the world has met and exceeded the Millennium Development Goals by the time of the next election.

We recognise and welcome the new government’s immediate public commitment to play a strong and positive role together with partner nations in Europe on global poverty as well as climate change.

Bond wishes to thank and pay tribute to all those politicians no longer in government and former parliamentarians who have taken action in support of international development in recent years.”

Bond engagement

As a new Parliament convenes, Bond is working with members on our engagement with the new Government and Parliament to ensure that they deliver the actions set out in the Vote Global manifesto.

Over the next months, there are several joint NGO activities planned, including an international development parliamentary reception in June and a mass lobby of Parliament this autumn.

Bond is fully committed to building the widest political support for positive action on international development in 2010 and the years ahead.
