Millennium Development Goals
World leaders from 189 nations agreed and signed the United Nations (UN) Millennium Declaration in 2000, committing these governments to a set of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to reduce extreme poverty by 2015.
However, a decade later the MDGs are badly off-track. On 20-22 September 2010, the General Assembly will hold a High-level Plenary Meeting in New York, also referred to as the "UN MDG Review Summit". The Summit's main focus will be to build on what we have learned during the past 10 years since the adoption of the Millennium Declaration and how to accelerate progress towards the internationally agreed development goals, in particular the eight MDGs. The Summit will take stock of the successes, best practices, lessons learned, obstacles and gaps related to the MDGs and other development goals.
The MDG Review Summit will be a significant moment for joint advocacy by international and UK NGOs.
Bond's work on the MDGs
Bond is leading and suppporting policy and campaigning initiatives in the UK, the EU and internationally to achieve the best possible result at the MDG Review Summit. Many Bond members are working on the eight different Millenium Development Goals this year lobbying the UK Government and other countries for progressive outcomes of the Summit. Bond aims to coordinate these different positions ensuring coherence of message in the sector.
Many Bond members are already planning actions in the run up to the Summit, and at the Summit itself. Bond is working closely with CONCORD, GCAP and our members ahead of the MDG Summit, and will continue to do so during and after the Summit itself.

Bond and CONCORD position paper
Bond and CONCORD have now finalised a joint position paper on the MDGs. The paper, which looks at overarching issues as well as each goal area, has clear demands both to the EU member states and for the EU to take to the September Summit.
