UK Advocacy on the MDGs
UK Civil Society Analysis of the UN MDG Review Summit 2010
Following the UN MDG Review Summit in September 2010, Bond produced a collective analysis of the Summit. The detailed analysis of the MDG Summit is a collective document signed by 28 Bond members, which follows on from the specific asks from Bond's paper 'A Last Chance to Keep our Promises'. It contains a series of specific recommendations to the UK Government which, if adopted, would enable the UK to make a meaningful contribution to the achievement of the MDGs by 2015.

International Development Committee releases report on the UN MDG Review Summit
Following a short enquiry on the MDG Summit, the IDC released their report on 19 December 2010.
The report is, in general, fairly positive about the Summit. However, it warns that success of international efforts rests on countries keeping their promises. The report also suggests that the UN needs to set out each country’s responsibilities in order to get the MDGs back on track.
Bond welcomes the publication of this report – many recommendations made by Bond and Bond members in submissions of evidence are reflected in the document, including:
- The necessity of an accountability framework for the Global Strategy on Women’s and Children’s Health.
- The need for a full detailed list of policy and financial commitments made at the Summit.
- The need for the development of a post-2015 development framework.
Bond MDGs statement: A last chance to keep our promises
In June 2010, Bond coordinated a joint statement entitled "A last chance to keep our promises" by UK civil society organisations ahead of the 2010 UN MDG Review Summit in New York. The statement is based on the Bond/CONCORD position paper "Towards the UN MDG Review Summit 2010 - Recommendations to the EU" and is signed by 54 Bond member organisations. Key asks include agreeing an ambitious and universal MDGs rescue plan, addressing the interlinkages between all eight MDGs and supporting a global action plan for maternal, newborn and child survival.
The statement was used at a Parliamentary Reception on International Development, and has been circulated to over 160 MPs, encouraging them to keep the MDGs on the parliamentary agenda.

Early Day Motion on International Development
On 8 June 2010, Tony Baldry MP tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) focusing on International Development and the MDGs. The motion welcomes the government's commitment to spend 0.7 per cent of gross national income on overseas aid and to enshrine this commitment in law, and acknowledges the importance of the G8, G20 and UN MDG Review Summit in mobilising the international community to achieve the MDGs.
Over 100 MPs have signed the EDM. We encourage Bond members to ask their MPs to add their signature to this EDM to show their support for international development and the MDGs and ensure sufficient debate in the UK Parliament ahead of the UN MDG Review Summit. The EDM, and a list of MPs supporting it, can be found on the Parliament website.
