MaAfrika Tikkun
MaAfrika
Tikkun was established in South Africa
in 1994 in direct response to President Nelson Mandela's request to civil
society to implement relief work for underprivileged communities in South Africa.
Our vision is of a South Africa, which through empowerment and education is
able to lift itself out of the spiral of poverty and disease to bring hope to
the lives of so many people in need. The organisation is an award-winning NGO
currently working in five informal settlements situated around Johannesburg and Cape Town, helping thousands of families
every week.
The organisation works together with local community structures to ensure that it is ultimately the communities themselves who have ownership and control of the programmes initiated and driven by MaAfrika Tikkun.
MaAfrika Tikkun's core focus is community empowerment with two focus areas:
- Care and Support
- Skills Development
We run a wide range of programmes from our community centres, which includes working with orphans and vulnerable children, palliative home-based caregivers and the elderly.
Why we are different
MaAfrika Tikkun differentiates itself by adopting a 'bottom-up' approach in communities. We consult and work exclusively with community-based organisations, recognised leaders within the community and community volunteers to identify areas of critical need, whilst working alongside them to find innovative ways of addressing these needs.
Community ownership is a critical differentiator and is vested with communities to ensure long-term sustainability.
