Advocating for UK NGOs and building the effectiveness of the development sector

Learning in the sector

In 2003 we carried out a substantial training needs analysis of our members which identified that alongside the skills needed by individuals, Bond should play a role in supporting its members to develop learning cultures both within their organisations and between organisations.

It was a natural decision to support the learning of organisations and of the sector as a whole as Bond has always emphasised the importance of the collective in bringing about change.

The 'Bond Approach to Quality in NGOs: putting beneficiaries first' defined a learning organisation as 'the one that builds and improves its own practice by continually developing the means to draw learning from its own and stakeholders' views and experience'.

Bond facilitates learning in the sector by ensuring that all our work presents learning platforms and opportunities for members.

This work with members has taken the form of workshops and training on organisational learning and development, Action Learning Sets for learning professionals and the support of the Organisational Learning group.

Bond recognises the inherent tensions with existing organisational systems in the sector between issues of 'reporting' and issues of 'learning' and we support our members to tackle these tensions mainly through the Quality group and the Donor and Learning bubble group
