Action Learning Sets

In a nutshell....

The Action Learning Set programme offers an innovative way of supporting NGO staff in their learning. Meeting as an inter-organisational group, learning is based on your own practice at work.

The methodology gives space for both standing back and reflecting on your practice, as well as planning your future action.

Action learning sets are groups of 5-7 peers who use a structured approach to learning around issues of practice. Members of the set commit to working together for a period of time (in the case of the Bond programme, nine sessions over a one-year period).

Set members bring a particular challenge or an issue, which they will be facing in their work situation over the timescale of the programme. The focus is on supporting each individual in deepening their understanding and learning about their particular challenge, so that they are better able to take informed action between sets, which they feedback about at the next meeting.

The action learning process is guided by principles and ground rules to ensure open but reflective dialogue guided by a set facilitator. Each participant has a set amount of time during which the focus will be on their issue. The focus of set members will be on helpful questioning rather than giving advice or judgement.
