Introduction

There was a buzz and energy at the Annual Conference on 4 November, and a clear sense of the need and desire to collaborate with others both inside and outside the Bond network on the issues facing our sector.  Over 210 delegates from 161 member organisations attended – a huge turnout which made for a lively day of thoughtful, open and frank discussion and a valuable opportunity to make or renew links with others.

Recent research, Global poverty and the new bottom billion: Three-quarters of the World’s poor live in middle-income countries, by Andy Sumner at the Institute of Development Studies make fascinating reading.  In taking a fresh look at where poor people live his findings serve to redefine what we commonly mean by the “bottom billion”.

Following formal adoption at the AGM, I am delighted that we have a new shared strategy for the whole network for the next five years. There was much energy and imagination in the discussion of priorities and what success might look like, and I am certain that by working on these common goals we will together, through Bond, deliver real impact over the coming years for our organisations and for our cause.

Earlier this year, the coalition Government announced their intention to introduce a ‘Freedom Bill’ which will restore civil liberties and the right to protest.  This is a vital issue for many NGOs and Bond is actively campaigning on it.  Bond members that have examples of when the law got in the way of effective campaigning should get in touch.
