MDGs Report 2011: assessing progress towards MDGs

The 2011 MDGs Report, launched on 7 July, presents the most updated assessment of progress towards the MDGs. According to the report, the world is still on track to achieve the MDGs, despite the setbacks brought by the recent economic and food crisis.

The report, however, stressed that progress has been uneven between countries, with the least developed countries still falling behind in improving living standards. Differences within countries are also significant, as progress vary considerably between urban and rural areas.

Keeping the Promise

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon's report on the MDGs, entitled Keeping the Promise, was released on 16 March 2010 and UN General Assembly plenary meetings on the Secretary General's Reports were held in May 2010. The President of the General Assembly, the co-facilitators of the MDGs process (Denmark and Senegal), and UN member states were tasked with identifying areas of possible agreement on issues under consideration.

Committments made at the MDG Summit

The UN had been tasked with compiling a comprehensive list of all the financial and political committments made by member states at the MDG Summit. Following a joint letter from Bond and GCAP, this list was released in January 2011 and can be found here. It should be read in conjunction with the explanatory note, which can be found here.

MDGs Advocacy Panel

On 23 June 2010, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the establishment of an advocacy group of eminent persons to try to galvanize support worldwide towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by their target date of 2015. The MDG Advocacy Group is co-chaired by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
