Influencing policy on international development

Financial and economic crisis

The financial and economic crisis has demonstrated to people worldwide that the current international economic system does not work. Over the last years, the international civil society organisations have been calling for a new international financial system that puts people first.

Joint advocacy efforts in 2010

In 2010, a policy group, co-convened by Bretton Woods Project and Bond, will be working on the G8 and G20 Summits and on reform of the global economic system.

Several joint advocacy activities are planned.

UK civil society responses to the financial crisis in 2009

Ahead of the London G20 Summit, Bond was actively involved in forming a broad civil society alliance consisting of development NGOs, trade unions, domestic poverty groups, environmental groups, faith based groups and many more calling on G20 leaders to "Put People First - Jobs, Justice, Climate".

Many civil society organisations were very active in joint advocacy lobbying UK government officials for progressive solutions to the financial and economic crisis. Ahead of the London G20 Summit, representatives of the Put People First platform including Bond met with Prime Minister Gordon Brown as well as several key ministers including Alistair Darling, Douglas Alexander and Ed Milliband stressing that now it is time for fundamental changes in the international financial system.

On 28 March 2009, thousands of people marched through London campaigning for decent jobs, global justice and a green economy. Read more about the mobilisation in 2009 on the Campaigning pages.

Several activities also took place around the following G20 meetings in autumn 2009.

Put People First policy paper

A Put People First policy paper was jointly drafted by Bond and many other members of the Put People First Platform laying out our vision for an alternative international financial system. The key messages in this paper formed the basis of our joint policy lobbying ahead of the London G20 Summit.
