European Development Days 2009
On 22-24 October 2009, the fourth edition of the European Development Days took place in Stockholm, Sweden. The event was attended by approximately 6,000 development actors, activists and politicians from all over the world who got together to discuss European development co-operation. The themes for this year’s event were citizenship and Development, Global Economic Situation, Climate Change.
Bond was represented by the Bond Secretariat as well as 11 Bond members who attended the event together with southern partners who had travelled to Stockholm to learn more about European development co-operation, and give a southern perspective on the topics discussed. The participation of the Bond members was paid for by a DFID grant, which was managed by Bond.
The event was attended by many high level politicians, including Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who argued for infrastructure: “If one wants to promote good governance and democracy, one needs a people that are able to access the information that enables them to do that. In many underdeveloped countries, infrastructure is a major constraint to development. Putting emphasis on building infrastructure is very important and that in itself will foster the processes of development.”
Meanwhile, Eva Joly, the chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Development, highlighted that achieving tax justice through re-considering tax havens and how multinationals operating in developing countries are taxed will be a key priority over the coming years for the European Parliament. Margot Wallstrom, vice-President of the European Commission stressed that a comprehensive deal must be reached at the Copenhagen climate summit in December: "There can be no Plan B as there is no Planet B"
