Making Europe work for development

EU policy

European Union (EU) countries provide over half of all development aid and form the world's largest trade bloc. As a result, the EU is pivotal to efforts for more and better aid, the resolution of debt problems, and trade justice.

European Union positions in international fora will also be critical in generating change on issues such as climate change, human rights, global public accountability, decent work standards and human security.

The extent of the European Union's contribution to eradicating poverty and inequality in the run up to the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals is yet to be determined.

At this defining time, civil society has a real opportunity to influence what Europe will stand for on the world stage in the years to come. Bond works in the UK and in Europe to maximise this opportunity to win change that contribute to the eradication of poverty and inequality worldwide.

Bond has published a Guide to influencing the EU to help organisations navigate the complexities of lobbying and advocating at  the EU level.

The Bond European Policy Group together with a number of other Bond groups carries out European policy work. As Bond's think tank on European Union (EU) development policy, the European Policy Group is a key forum for EU policy work, ensuring effective representation of UK development NGOs in the EU and maximum impact of Bond's work with its sister NGO platforms across the EU.

The European Policy Group believes that the EU's international role should be to deliver on international commitments to eradicate poverty, promote economic justice and fair trade and realise universal human rights. As a first step towards these goals, the EU should make a significant contribution towards achieving and surpassing the Millennium Development Goals in sustainable, inclusive and equitable ways.
