European Commission consultation on Social Protection

The European Commission is drafting a Communication on 'Social Protection in European Union Development Cooperation' to be adopted in 2012 as a follow up to the Agenda for Change. The EC welcomes contributions from citizens, public authorities and stakeholders in Europe and third countries to hear their views on EU strategy and options for supporting social protection in its development cooperation.

The consultation runs until 24 February. Check the official website for further information.

New IDC inquiry on Zambia

In addition to using Zambia as a case study in its inquiry into tax in developing countries, the  International Development Committee (IDC) has announced that it will also look at DFID’s programme in Zambia.

The IDC invites submissions on DFID’s programme in Zambia, including assessments of DFID’s priorities and how progress towards the MDGs can be ensured.

The deadline for submitting written evidence is Thursday, 23 February 2012.  More information is available on IDC's Zambia consultation page.

IDC inquiry into tax in developing countries

The International Development Committee is to begin an inquiry into tax in developing countries. The Committee will use Zambia as a case study due to its aid dependence, high poverty levels and the large mining sector. The Department for International Development (DFID) is spending £59 million in the country each year until 2015.

Key issues for the inquiry include:

  • how DFID can better support developing countries to improve revenue collection
  • how DFID can support developing countries to use the revenue base responsibly in order to improve service delivery and development outcomes
  • tax evasion and avoidance in developing countries by private individuals and companies
  • how effective international efforts to promote tax disclosure and transparency are likely to be
  • capital flight and its implications for developing countries

The deadline for submitting written evidence is Monday 6 February 2012.

New IDC inquiry into the Development Situation in Malawi

The International Development Committee has launched a new inquiry into the development situation in Malawi. The deadline for submitting written evidence is Monday 20 February 2012 and the Committee invites submissions on:

  • How the UK can best help to improve opportunities for economic growth, job creation and meeting the Millennium Development Goal targets in Malawi
  • The role of DFID in protecting civil liberties including freedom of expression and access to justice
  • The conditions under which the UK should continue to provide development assistance to Malawi
