Advocating for UK NGOs and building the effectiveness of the development sector

Bribery Act 2010

The Bribery Act 2010 came into force on 1 July 2011. The Act is sound legislation which went through extensive consultation with relevant stakeholders, including civil society and business, and which passed with an all-party consensus in April 2010. In March 2011, the Government published guidelines to commercial organisations avoid falling foul of the Act.

The Bond Governance Group strongly supports the Bribery Act as the first step in the fight against corruption by UK companies abroad. However, significant concerns remain regarding the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) interpretation of the Act, as well as about the political will to resource its effective enforcement. The Governance Group wrote a letter to Ken Clarke, Secretary of State for Justice, urging him to ensure proper enforcement of the Act.
