Beyond 2015: UK leadership on a post-MDGs global development framework

Interest in what comes after the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 2015 deadline is intensifying. Bond has been one of leading organisations advancing civil society engagement on this agenda. With partners we developed and launched Beyond 2015, an international campaign to kick-start and accelerate the post-2015 planning process and push for a strong and legitimate successor framework to the MDGs.

A number of UK NGOs have been playing a key role internationally, with hundreds of other engaged NGOs, in action towards a global overarching cross-thematic framework for development after 2015 and ensuring a process that is participatory, inclusive and responsive to voices of those directly affected by poverty and injustice. This month a Bond Beyond 2015 Group is forming for coordinated action as more UK NGOs become active on this agenda.

Influencing the UK Government is one area where collaboration amongst Bond members will be critical. It is becoming evident that reaching a post-MDG agreement will be an intergovernmental process; governments meeting in a UN context to agree a framework. National level advocacy will therefore be vital – in the UK and in every country where civil society can galvanise government action.

NGOs hope to see increasing positive political leadership by the UK. Development minister Stephen O’Brien signalled a shift in that direction to MPs in January, saying that: “Securing global agreement on a framework that updates the MDGs is a major priority for the coalition Government. Just as MDGs are at the heart of Government development policy, a successor framework should be central to all that we do, which means shaping it to ensure that any future global agreement reflects what we know about achieving results in the fight against global poverty. The UK will play a leading role.”

Dialogue and more influencing of the UK’s position and action internationally has become a primary concern for UK NGOs. As has both how we all work effectively as a UK development sector with civil society in the EU and internationally, especially with partners in the South. The Bond Beyond 2015 Group provides a space of shaping influencing strategy as well as sharing and connection on the UK’s role – NGOs, citizens and government – on what is fast-becoming a platform for civil society renewal globally.
