In the Multilateral Aid Review agencies were judged both on their organisational strengths and their contribution to UK development objectives, with these indices determining each multilateral’s score and ‘value for money’ to the UK. Key results include the high scores achieved by UNICEF, the GAVI Alliance, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
The Bilateral Aid Review also concluded with significant increases to Britain’s aid commitments to several countries including Nigeria, Kenya, the DRC, Yemen and Ethiopia while Pakistan becomes the biggest single recipient of UK aid. Overall the report signified a reduction in the amount of countries Britain supports bilaterally from 43 to 27.
On both reviews the need to provide ‘value for money’ and aid effectiveness was clearly of critical importance to the government. Bond will be continuing to work with DFID and the Independent Commission on Aid Impact in assessing DFID’s new priorities as highlighted in both respective aid reviews.
