Advocates for International Development (A4ID)

A4ID is a UK-based charity which sources lawyers to provide free legal advice and assistance to support organisations working in international development. As the Commission on the Legal Empowerment of the Poor recently reported, over four billion people in some of the world's poorest countries are unable to benefit from the rights and protections offered by the law. A4ID aims to further the UN Millennium Development Goals by providing greater access to much needed legal expertise.

As a broker, A4ID matches its range of development partners, including ActionAid, Global Witness and Farm Africa, with its pool of 18,000 lawyers from a variety of leading international law firms.   Last year, A4ID saved the development sector over £1 million in legal fees.

Lawyers are able to support the work of NGOs in a number of ways including:

  • Researching rights and laws across different jurisdictions to inform policy work
  • Reviewing proposed legislative reform to ensure compliance with international standards
  • Overseeing the preparation and negotiation of partnership agreements and contracts to ensure the protection of rights and interests
  • Reviewing pre-published campaigning reports to identify potential liable
  • Giving guidance to microfinance institutions on how to negotiate with banks

All of A4ID's Legal Partners are committed to providing the same high level of service that they offer to their fee paying clients.
