Over 100,000 people demand politicians tackle global poverty

18 October 2009

Over 100,000 people across the UK took part in a ‘Great Persuasion' of politicians from 16-18 October, calling on them to tackle global poverty and inequality.

More than 200 MPs and candidates were contacted and given a copy of the Bond International Development Manifesto, including deputy leader of the Labour Party Harriet Harman, Conservative manifesto writer Oliver Letwin and Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Vince Cable.

Thousands more people attended poverty-themed public meetings and faith services to take a stand against poverty.

Bond Campaigns Communications Officer, and UK event coordinator, Tim Gee said:

"People of rich and poor countries alike have delivered a clear message to politicians: keep your aid promises, and don't let the good work aid does be lessened by the effects of climate change and the financial crisis"

Archbishop of York Dr. John Sentamu added his support by saying:

"The time has come for each of us to speak truth unto power, and that truth is that we will no longer be content to wait for justice for the poorest of the poor whilst the world's biggest economies shore up their rich. It is high time we started talking about material welfare instead of material wealth"

Millions of people around the world took action as part of the ‘Stand Up and Take Action' initiative of the Global Call to Action against Poverty and the UN Millennium Campaign.
