Bond members meet with Douglas Alexander on new DFID White Paper
16 July 2009
Over 60 Bond members met with Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for International Development, to discuss the new DFID White Paper on 15 July.
At the Bond event, held at DFID, Douglas Alexander praised Bond members for their 'programme excellence, capacity for innovation and peerless influence and access on advocacy', citing these as reasons for the increased support for UK NGOs announced in the White Paper, which was launched on 6 July.
According to the Secretary of State, the impetus for this new White Paper came from the degree to which the world has changed in the last year, since the financial crisis. This has brought new challenges to development and highlighted the need for more focused work on sustainable economic growth, conflict and fragile states, the climate crisis and ensuring effective multilateral institutions.
He acknowledged the vital role Bond members' White Paper consultation submissions played in determining the final content, with NGO input on climate change in particular having a significant effect on DFID's thinking.
