Big IF London
8 June 2013
Over 45,000 people joined the Big IF rally in Hyde Park on Saturday to demand G8 action on the causes of hunger. The mass demonstration of public support for ending hunger took place 10 days before the G8 meets in Northern Ireland to discuss the causes of hunger and as the UK Government co-hosted a ‘Nutrition Summit’ of world leaders and major donors.
The Big IF London heard from Danny Boyle, Bill Gates and Rowan Williams, together with big name celebrities like David Harewood and Myleene Klass. Specially recorded messages from David Beckham and Eddie Izzard were broadcast to the crowd.
The event marked the start of a 10-day countdown to the G8, during which time there will be three key summits that could tackle the causes of hunger. Members of the public at the event helped create a huge visual petition to demonstrate the scale of public support for the IF campaign. The petition was made up of 250,000 spinning flowers, with a total of two million petals representing the two million children who die because of malnutrition each year – lives that can be saved if world leaders take action at the G8.
