G8 and G20 summits in Canada
1 July 2010
Concrete results for the poor were conspicuous by their absence from both the G8 and G20 summits in Canada in June.
These meetings presented an important opportunity for world leaders to reaffirm their commitment to promises made to people living in poverty around the world, yet they failed to deliver.
Glen Tarman, Bond Advocacy Manager said: "Bond members and their partners internationally are very disappointed that G8 leaders have not delivered on the commitments they made at the 2005 G8 Summit in Gleneagles to increase aid by $50billion and to double aid to Africa by 2010.
"In the year when these promises were due to be met, the G8 communiqué failed to mention them. This indicates a worrying retreat from these critical aid targets by most G8 countries at a time when developing countries are hit by the impact of the financial crisis, climate change and increasing poverty".
The next key moment to pressure leaders into action on global poverty will be the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Review Summit.
