AidWatch 2010 report launched
10 June 2010
Read the CONCORD press release, an excerpt is below:
"With five years to go to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), EU member states are breaking their international commitments to tackle poverty. Next week, EU leaders meeting in Brussels are expected to agree a catch up plan ahead of the UN MDG summit in September in New York.
The AidWatch 2010 report provides an overview of EU development aid, member states progress towards their aid targets and how their aid money is spent.
Figures released by the OECD in April 2010 show that EU development aid has stagnated, leaving member states unlikely to meet their aid targets. The AidWatch 2010 report shows that the real amount of aid reaching developing countries is far lower than that reported by the OECD. In a climate of economic crisis, many EU countries have cut their development aid, breaking their international commitment.
The AidWatch report shows that many EU countries have a clear lack of political will on development and, with time running out, calls for urgent action to save the MDGs."
UK Aid Network said, "In contrast to the picture across much of Europe the UK is on course to deliver its promised 0.7% of national income as aid by 2013, and it is delivering more genuine aid (excludes aid spent in donor country and debt relief) than any other EU member state."
