Parliamentary report on aid bill published
25 March 2010
The International Development Committee of the UK Parliament has published its report into the proposed Draft International Development Spending Bill, which would write into law the UK's commitment to deliver 0.7% of national income as aid from 2013.
Bond members with the UK Aid Network had submitted written and oral submissions to the Committee highlighting the importance of the bill to secure UK aid commitments.
The report confirmed that the legislation will help protect 0.7% in to the future and promote better predictabiltiy of the UK's aid at the macro level. Yet committee members raised some concerns around accountability and whether this bill would inspire other donors to do likewise and ensure international aid commitments are met.
With an election expected to be called within the next weeks, the future of this legislation will depend on support from the next government. Bond will support the UK Aid Network in its efforts to get the bill high on the political agenda for the next Parliament.
