The Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) is the world's largest anti-poverty civil society alliance, with more than 100 national platforms.
In 2005, the UK platform of this was Make Poverty History. The G8's promises in that year for increased aid, partial debt cancellation and funding for HIV/AIDS are now making a real difference, however they are still to be delivered in full. Furthermore, key demands on full cancellation of illegitimate debt, trade justice and economic sovereignty for developing countries continue to be ignored. Greenhouse gas levels continue to rise, destabilising the climate and causing devastation to the lives of many - especially in the developing world.
The world's governments must feel the pressure and take the radical action that is needed to address issues around trade justice, climate change, aid, debt, and other relevant issues.
To emphasise this message, GCAP is organising 50 Global Days of Action Against Poverty and Inequality from 1 September - 20 October 2008.
People from around the world will be taking action together around key events such as the High Level Meeting on Aid Effectiveness in Accra, the Millennium Development Goals moment in New York, World Day for Decent Work, World Food Day, World Day Against EPAs, World Week of Action Against Debt, the annual meetings if the World Bank and IMF and 'Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty'.
In the UK a number of additional events will be taking place including lobbying at party conferences, a climate change stunt facilitated by Christian Aid, and CAFOD's Harvest Fast.
The 50 Global Days of Action Against Poverty and Inequality is an opportunity to intensify anti-poverty actions aimed at decision makers, to develop activists, to show solidarity with campaigners in the Global South and to show that people still care about a diversity of global poverty issues.
Amongst the issues that people will be working on are:
More and Better Aid
- Aid for Agriculture
-
Funding for the MDGs
-

Debt Cancellation
- Pick up the pace on promised debt cancellation
-
